|
This Column is a continuation of the previous one, and therefore I will follow on with the same numbering. (3) recall / recollect 思い出す・思い起こす・回想する・思い出して言う "Remember" can also often be used instead of them. However, "recall" and "recollect" have a slightly more formal nuance, and are often used when we are remembering experiences, events, scenes, etc. in the past. Also, "recall" and "recollect" can suggest "remembering and speaking", as in this sentence: She recalled / recollected some of her experiences. Here are the common patterns with these verbs: I couldn't recall/recollect her name/who she was/seeing her. In addition, it is useful to remember the following idiomatic expression: As far as I can recall/recollect, I have never seen her. (4) recall 思い出させる・想起させる What you have just said recalled an experience to me. I hope that these two Columns have helped some readers sort out the grammar and meanings of these "memory" words. |
